Ambitions To Design A Website? Get Trained!

If you have a good eye for visually pleasing material - whether that's on a website, a book cover, a magazine, or a billboard - then a training course in graphic design could give you professional skills. Many graphic designers studied art courses at school, or were just always interested in artistic work.

However, if you don't have much drawing experience to date that's not the end of the world - you'll probably find you spend more time designing on the computer now than by hand.

Working as a graphic designer could mean being employed in a small design company, a large international concern, or working on projects for yourself. There are graduate qualifications and commercial certifications. Either can be appropriate but really you'll get more prepared for work in the design world at a commercial college than at university. Equally you may decide that you'd like a bit of commercial training prior to attending uni, and you can get that by enrolling on a short portfolio course.

Which Training College Is For Me?

It's important to find the most suitable design college and course for your needs, as there are many to choose from. Put enough time into your research - costs and quality can vary hugely from one to the next. You'll see different colleges advertising on this page - don't just visit the odd one or two (you wouldn't buy a house after visiting only two properties, so why risk your lifetime's career by skimping on the preliminary work?).

If you add this page to your 'favourites' you can return to it quickly when you want to research further. It will start to become apparent what you're looking for as you surf the different sites and become more informed.

Their own website should be a design statement for any worthy college. You'll want to see a pretty impressively designed site, or alarm bells should be ringing!

Plus the course has to fit your current commitments. Can you tailor in a full-on five days a week training programme, or do you need the flexibility of a home-based system? Over what time period will help and assistance be provided? Should you expect to have to purchase any additional equipment to do the course? Look for testimonials from previous students, and from employers who've taken on ex-students - what was it that impressed them the most?

Powerful Portfolios

Your design portfolio will be the biggest statement of the measure of your work. When you graduate from college you must be able to show a prospective employer the type of design you can do. Any viable design institute will incorporate the facility for students to present their portfolios, so take a look through the student gallery pages to see what others have done there.

Is It Better To Have A Mac Or A PC?

FREE IT Training GuideIn order to handle various software applications, a student of graphic design will need to be able to use a computer quite well. There will of course be an element of print-based work, but most commercial training will be web-based and use elements of the Adobe Creative Suite, notably InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

Whether you choose to work on a Mac or a PC is up to you - Adobe software can be used on both, though you'll probably find design colleges mostly use Macs.

To become a graphic designer, you must have good interpersonal skills and the ability to sell your ideas to clients. Even the image on the front of a box of washing powder is the result of graphic design.

Through the use of font, imagery and shape in a pleasing format, graphic design work can 'speak' to an audience and provoke an emotional response in them for something that otherwise they might not have noticed.

Perspectives In Design

Designers have many tools in their arsenal - including colour, texture, composition, contrast, shape, repetition, white space, alignment and balance. Anyone who really gets to grips with these design rules and adds their own flair and imagination can carve out a career for themselves that will be second to none! Graphics can help to attract, educate and reassure a huge number of customers, and so play a big part in every marketing campaign.

Professional tuition will turn your aptitude for design into your ability to design. Go for content, quality and a proven track-record.
